Board Certified in Pain Medicine
Dr. Mark Simonson specializes in the nonsurgical relief
of back and neck pain symptoms. He is Medical Director of PacificaSpine and is Board Certified in two medical
specialties: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), and
Pain Medicine. PacificaSpine has locations in Thousand Oaks and Ventura.
Dr. Simonson was a college football athlete, and graduated
with a B.A. cum laude from St. Olaf College, in 1979. Then, from 1979
through the 1980s, Dr. Simonson had a most distinctive career as founder,
designer and president of Cybex Fitness System’s world leading
line of fitness and rehabilitation products. Dr. Simonson’s designs
are still in use across the world today, improving the lives of countless
people in general fitness, rehabilitation, and professional athletics.
In 1985, Dr. Simonson and his physical therapist wife,
Mira, co-founded a spine and sports medicine PT practice in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming. It is here where he became aware of the shortcomings
of a surgery-biased approach, and committed to becoming an expert in
the nonsurgical aspects of neck and back care, and integrating this
knowledge into a multi-disciplinary model where different professionals
coordinate treatment for the most efficient and optimal care of each
patient.
Dr. Simonson went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine
degree, with Honors, from the University of Hawaii in 1994. He completed
his specialty training in the evaluation and nonsurgical treatment
of neck and back pain, in the department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation,
at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. While at Mayo, he was the national
resident representative on the Board of Directors of the Physiatric
Association of Spine, Sports & Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR).
After leaving the Mayo Clinic, he practiced for many
years in the Black Hills of South Dakota at a five-state regional referral
center he co-founded, The Rehab Doctors. The Rehab Doctors was an independent
Physical Medicine practice that coordinated care with other local providers
including orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, physical therapists,
and chiropractors.
This background as a world leading designer of fitness
and rehabilitation equipment, experience in spine and sports physical
therapy, and expertise in the nonsurgical treatment of neck and back
pain, laid the foundation for development of his multidisciplinary
spine center, PacificaSpine.
PacificaSpine was founded by Dr. Simonson in early 2006,
to provide an optimal nonsurgical alternative to back and neck pain
sufferers in Ventura County, with locations in Ojai, Thousand Oaks and Ventura. PacificaSpine also helps to serve the needs of pain sufferers in surrounding communities including Westlake Village, Agoura Hills,
Oxnard, Camarillo, Simi Valley and Santa Barbara. PacificaSpine is
a multi-disciplinary spine center of excellence, and includes the nonsurgical
expertise of Physical Medicine, spine-specialized Physical Therapy,
and Pain Medicine.
